PEP GUARDIOLA PREVIEW
City boss Pep Guardiola has revealed that Oscar Bobb could be involved in Wednesday’s huge Champions League first phase finale at home to Club Brugge.
The Norwegian creative midfielder has been sidelined since the Community Shield last August with a leg injury.
However, addressing the media at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference, the City manager confirmed that Bobb - who returned to training earlier this month - was in the selection mix for arguably our biggest game of the season to date.
And Pep also confirmed that John Stones, who came on for the final 35 minutes of Saturday’s Premier League win at home to Chelsea, could also be in contention to feature.
“The guys who were there against Chelsea are there and I think Oscar came back as well,” Pep said when addressing his selection options.
“[John Stones] played 35 minutes [on Saturday] and played really well. We will see today how he feels.”
New signings Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov are all ineligible for the game.
PREVIOUS MEETING
We’ve only ever faced the Belgian side twice in our history, with both games coming in the group stage of the 2021/22 edition of the Champions League.
At the Etihad, goals from Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus inspired us to a 4-1 victory.
The reverse fixture a month earlier ended 5-1 for City in Belgium, with Mahrez netting a brace, added by goals from Joao Cancelo, Kyle Walker and Cole Palmer.
LAST TIME OUT
Our last Champions League game last week saw us drop a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 away to Paris Saint-Germain.
Our last league outing ended in an impressive 3-1 victory over Chelsea, propelling us into fourth place in the Premier League table.
As for Brugge, they held Italian giants Juventus to a 0-0 draw a week ago and were held to a 1-1 draw against lowly KV Kortrijk in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday evening.
AS IT STANDS
For City, it is simple. This is a must-win game. We are currently in 25th position, with eight points and +2 goal difference, whilst Brugge are in 20th, with 11 points and -2 goal difference.
A victory will see the Blues leapfrog Brugge into the top 24 of the league phase and secure a two-legged play-off round place for the right to progress to the Round of 16.
