Team news

Gareth Taylor says Lauren Hemp is 'close' to a return ahead of City's Barclays Women's Super League clash with Brighton.

The winger has been ruled out of action since picking up a thigh complaint in our 3-0 victory over Reading at the beginning of November.

Asked for an update on the Hemp's condition ahead of the weekend, the boss revealed that she had returned to training earlier this week.

"Lauren’s close, she's been back training with us the last couple of days so we’ll give her another 24 hours," Taylor explained.

"The temptation is to want to have these players back, it's the same with Vicky [Losada], just getting them closer.

"I think hopefully over this next period we’ll see a couple coming back, but outside of that everyone’s in fairly good shape and there's a good feeling as well."

Gareth Taylor preview

"They are a difficult team to play against. They are scoring goals and conceding goals as well.

"With Hope [Powell] leaving, I don’t see too many real changes in what they do and how they operate.

"There are no easy games in the WSL, but we are happy to be home. We are really looking forward to the game on Sunday."

Form Guide

City are in pursuit of an eighth successive victory in all competitions ahead of this weekend's clash.

During that time Gareth Taylor's side have scored 23 times and conceded on just two occasions.

We go into the tie fourth in the WSL, six points off top spot with a game in hand.

Brighton currently sit ninth in the table, but have picked up four points from a possible six in each of their last two matches to pull away from the relegation zone.

Previous meeting

Four goals from Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw helped City to a dominant 7-2 triumph over the Seagulls in our most recent encounter back in April 2022.

A brace from the Jamaican and further strike from Caroline Weir saw Gareth Taylor's side take a three-goal lead inside 15 minutes.

Another two from Shaw, plus goals from Alex Greenwood and Lauren Hemp, set the seal on a dominant display.

Last time out

City ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over Sunderland to make it two wins out of two in the Continental Cup.

Julie Blakstad opened the scoring inside the first ten minutes with a tap-in from close range, with Hayley Raso smashing home our second shortly after the restart.

Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw's emphatic finish sealed our second win in two Continental Cup games so far on the hour.

Brighton also come into the tie on the back of a victory, getting the better of London City in the Continental Cup.

Match stats

  • City have scored 34 goals in seven WSL games against Brighton, with our average of 4.9 per game the highest one team has against another in the competition (min. 6 meetings).
  • We have also won our last eight WSL home games by an aggregate score of 30-3.
  • Gareth Taylor's side have won 26 of our last 27 WSL home games against non-London sides, scoring 84 goals and conceding just eight in that run. The only exception was a 0-0 draw against Brighton in September 2020.
  • No side have scored more second half goals in the WSL this season than City (12). Meanwhile, Brighton have conceded more goals in the final 15 minutes of games (9) than City have in total (8) in the competition this term.
  • As well as being involved in more WSL goals than any other player this season (10 – 8 goals, 2 assists), Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw has the best minutes-per-goal ration of anyone to score more than once this term (one every 73 minutes).
  • No players have made more ball carries ending in a chance created in the WSL this season than Man City's Chloe Kelly or Brighton's Katie Robinson (9 each).
