On This Day: Duggan downs Chelsea, high fives in New York

Looking back at events – good or otherwise – that happened on this day in our history…

May 25

1893: Lawrence Furniss gives up the managerial post at Ardwick AFC in order to become more involved with affairs off the field, and takes on the responsibility of the Club’s financial troubles.

Twice named chairman of City, Lawrence also helped oversee the move to Maine Road in 1923.

He was always a very influential character at the Club having been a player in the early 1880s, but retired due to a leg injury and remained in a behind-the-scenes role.

1979: City’s end of season tour to Italy continues with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Serie B side Avellino.

Having already drawn 2-2 with AS Roma, the squad eventually complete the tour with a 2-1 defeat to Napoli.

2013: City defeat Chelsea 5-3 in a goal-laden post season friendly played in New York.

The victory boosted the squad's bid to win a fourth domestic trophy in less than nine months and also helped lifted City above Chelsea into second place in the Spring Series table.
