On this day: Vital win at Saints and Bradbury brace sees off Stockport

Looking back at events, signings and games from City’s history that occurred on this day…

Monday 4 April 1994

City complete a crucial Easter programme with a 1-0 victory away to Southampton.

Victory over Aston Villa three days earlier had injected life into a side who hadn’t won in five matches.

German midfielder Stefan Karl scores the late winner at The Dell to push the Saints further towards the drop.

The new front trio of Paul Walsh, Peter Beagrie and Uwe Rosler will eventually steer Brian Horton’s side away from relegation

Saturday 4 April 1998

City beat Stockport County 4-1 as Joe Royle’s side claim three vital points.

Shaun Goater scores after just five minutes, but Aaron Wilbraham levels just a minute later.

Richard Jobson and Lee Bradbury add further goals for City before the break and Bradbury completes the scoring before the hour-mark to settle the Greater Manchester derby watched by a full house at Maine Road.

Saturday April 4 2004

Sylvain Distin rescues a precious point for City away to Aston Villa.

Juan Pablo Angel had given Villa the lead on 32 minutes as Kevin Keegan’s side battle against relegation.

City have won just twice in 20 matches on a terrible run since November.

Wednesday 4 April 2018

Another unhappy visit to Anfield as City lose the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool 3-0.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane in the first 31 minutes put Jurgen Klopp’s side in firm control of the tie and give City a mountain to climb in the return leg.

Pep Guardiola says: “The clean sheet is so important for them. We are going to see how the players react. Accept the defeat, accept Liverpool being clinical and precise and we’ll see what happens next week.”
