On this day: League Cup delight and Aguero is a Christmas cracker!

Looking at matches, moments and events that happened this day in our history...

December 21

1994: In a season of dramatic ups and downs, City were at our unpredictable best as we travelled to Newcastle for a fifth round replay to try and earn a place in the League Cup quarter finals for the first time since 1988.

The two teams, both starved of silverware, had battled out a 1-1 draw at Maine Road and were equally desperate of progressing to a possible Wembley appearance.

City had dished out several thrashings in the Premiership already, but had been well beaten on several occasions, too, so it was into the unknown on a bitter evening in the north-east.

Fortunately, it was a ‘can-do’ performance, both gutsy and attacking with Uwe Rosler and Paul Walsh each scoring to give City a 2-0 victory and send the travelling army home both delighted and a little shocked at a rare win in Newcastle.

2011: Two goals from Sergio Aguero helped City to a comfortable 3-0 win over Stoke and ensured we would be top of the Premier League table at Christmas.

The Argentine scored at the back post, after Vincent Kompany's saved shot, and converted Samir Nasri's cross either side of a second strike for Roberto Mancini’s men.

Stoke rarely troubled us, with Marc Wilson going closest but his effort went wide.

The win ensured we remained two points clear, and meant we would be Christmas leaders for the first time since 1929.

2013: City moved up to second in the Premier League table after a thrilling 4-2 victory away at Fulham.

Yaya Toure scored direct from a free-kick and Vincent Kompany prodded in a second as Manuel Pellegrini's men looked to be in control.

Fulham pulled one back when Kieran Richardson finished off a counter-attacking move before Kompany sliced a clearance into his own net for 2-2.

But Jesus Navas converted David Silva's pass to restore City's lead and James Milner tapped in a fourth goal late on.

2019: Kevin De Bruyne inspired City to a tremendous fightback as Pep Guardiola’s side recovered from a goal down to beat Leicester 3-1 at the Etihad.

City had to do it the hard way, falling behind to Jamie Vardy's superbly taken breakaway goal, but inspired by a magnificent performance by De Bruyne, we roared back to take the points.

Riyad Mahrez, cut in from the right and fired in a low shot that cannoned off Caglar Soyuncu and left Kasper Schmeichel helpless.

Three minutes before the break, Ricardo Pereira lunged in on Raheem Sterling inside the box and, after Mike Dean pointed to the spot, Ilkay Gundogan fired his penalty into the bottom corner.

And De Bruyne helped make the points safe with his 13th assist of the season.

He burst into the box with an unstoppable run down the right and squared for Gabriel Jesus to slide home our third goal at the far post.
