On This Day: It's farewell to Zaba and Horton departs
Looking back at this day – good or bad – in City’s history…

May 16

1995: Manager Brian Horton is relieved of his duties by Chairman Francis Lee after City finish a topsy-turvy season just four points off relegation.

Horton’s entertaining brand of football had won him many friends at City and by early December, his side were in sixth place and challenging for a European spot.

However, a run of four wins in the last 25 games saw Horton’s side plummet down the table and narrowly miss relegation.

2017: City clinched an emphatic 3-1 win over West Brom to move back up to third place in the Premier League with one game remaining.

But despite goals from Gabriel Jesus, Kevin De Bruyne and Yaya Toure, the night was all about the departing Pablo Zabaleta.

After nine years with City in which he won every domestic trophy, the hugely popular Argentina defender came off the bench for his final appearance for the Club.

Following an emotional farewell speech at the final whistle, when he was joined on the pitch by his wife and young son, Zaba was given a guard of honour by his team-mates as he and his family departed down the tunnel.

2018: Nikita Parris scores a hat-trick as Nick Cushing’s City record a convincing 5-0 FA Women’s Super League win over Yeovil at the Academy Stadium.

Claire Emslie and Izzy Christiansen are also on target in a win which ensured that second-placed City’s UEFA Champions League qualification bid would remain in our own hands going into the final day of the season.
