Gallery: Foden strike sinks Seagulls!

Phil Foden's first-half goal propelled Manchester City to a 1-0 Premier League victory over an organised Brighton and Hove Albion at a rainy Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola's men began the encounter confidently and fashioned the first chance of the game, but skipper Kevin de Bruyne was denied from close range by Robert Sanchez.

The Belgian was at his creative best as usual and was the centre of attention again, as his powerful cross fizzed across the six-yard box towards the onrushing Riyad Mahrez, but the visitors scrambled the ball clear.

With one minute remaining until the interval, City finally broke through the rigid Brighton defence.

Once again, it was De Bruyne who played the key pass, registering his 99th assist for the club by feeding Foden, who rifled into the bottom corner with his weaker right foot.

Guardiola's men emerged from the break looking for a second and almost had it through Joao Cancelo, but his strike was parried to safety by Sanchez.

Graham Potter's men gained more confidence with each passing second and threatened to equalise, with Alexis Mac Allister's curling effort floating inches over the top corner.

Raheem Sterling had a great chance to double the lead in stoppage time from the penalty spot, but the Englishman missed the target after De Bruyne was fouled.

We hung on to secure the three points and stretch our unbeaten run in all competitions to 14 matches.
