Benjamin Mendy has been named in City’s starting XI against Liverpool.

The France left-back has been absent since the start of last month and with Fabian Delph out with injury, he could not have timed his return any better.

Pep Guardiola also recalls Riyad Mahrez at the expense of Leroy Sane and goes with a central defensive pairing of John Stones and Aymeric Laporte.

RIYAD MAHREZ: Starts today

Starting XI:

Ederson, Walker, Laporte, Stones, Mendy, Fernandinho, D Silva (c), Bernardo, Mahrez, Sterling, Aguero

Subs: Muric, Kompany, Otamendi, G Jesus, Danilo, Sane, Foden

Formation:

It remains to be seen how the Blues will approach this game once the game starts, but on paper it looks like a 4-3-3.

David Silva and Bernardo are likely to be central behind Sergio Aguero with Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling on the flanks.

It’s likely there will some fine tuning, tactically, but Pep’s comments of ball possession is the best way to stop Liverpool will be key.

City may look to go over the Liverpool press – the Merseysiders are one of the best in the Premier League at getting in their opponents’ faces.

It will be fascinating to see how both managers have set their team up, given the four meetings of last season.

RAZ DAZZLE: Raheem will want to shine at Anfield

Goals guaranteed?

With 18 goals in the four meetings last season, this fixture averaged 4.5 goals per match.

City (19) and Liverpool (15) have bagged 34 goals from the 14 matches combined in the Premier League, so it seems unlikely this encounter will end 0-0.

Pep says City must score to avoid losing at Anfield – and the stats suggest he is spot-on.

Stats and milestones

Could today be the day Aguero ends his long wait for a goal at Anfield? The City striker has gone nine games without a goal away to Liverpool (seven games City and two with Atletico Madrid) – an issue he doesn’t have in the home fixture where he has scored in all six games he’s played against them.

City are looking for a first win at Anfield since 2003 and only a second win in this fixture for 37 years!

A defeat for the Blues would mean a fourth defeat in a calendar year to one opponent for only the third time in Club history with Spurs (1993) and Grimsby Town (1936) the other two occasions.
