Fernandinho targets FA Cup glory

MY BOY: Fernandinho and Bacary Sagna

MY BOY: Fernandinho and Bacary Sagna

Fernandinho says winning the FA Cup is a priority for Manchester City this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side face Huddersfield Town on Wednesday in a fifth-round replay, with the winner set to travel to Middlesbrough in the quarter-finals.

City are also chasing Champions League glory and are involved in a battle to halt Chelsea’s march to the Premier League title, leaving them with a packed fixture schedule between now and the end of the season.

But Fernandinho has refuted any suggestion that City may prioritise those competitions over the FA Cup, insisting they want to go all the way to Wembley.

"If we win we are in the quarter-finals and after that we can be at Wembley," he said.

“It’s extremely important because the FA Cup it’s a beautiful competition and we want to go as far as possible.

"The support of our fans in the FA Cup will be very important. For us the aim is to be in the final."

The Brazilian has been used in a number of roles this season, including right-back and left-back in recent weeks, with Guardiola saying in the summer he is a player of capable of operating "10 different positions".

The 31-year-old is happy to move around the field and experience different roles and says the principles of the game remain the same, regardless of where he is on the pitch.

“No matter what position I play, the aim is always to have possession of the ball, create supremacy, to allow the team to feel that we have more players in the midfield - to help create more passes and chances,” he said.

“Of course it’s a different position [left-back] and I was not used to it but we gain knowledge and are able to be good with the tactics.

“I don’t know what position I will be playing from now on.

“I will try to play as often as possible as a midfielder, but for me the most important is the team’s victory and try to achieve a good position on the Premier League table.”
