Lauren Hemp says no other fixture compares to when City take on our cross-city rivals Manchester United.

The England international is no stranger to experiencing derby day and all the delights and bragging rights it offers up.

The two Barclays Women’s Super League teams have been going head-to-head since 2019, with City boasting 12 wins in our 23 encounters compared to six draws and five defeats.

And in our latest clash at the Leigh Sports Village on Sunday 25 October, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00 (UK), is another game City will be ready to fight tooth and nail in as we look to make it seven WSL wins from seven.

“Yeah, it’s a special feeling,” said Hemp when asked why Manchester derbies are unique.

“I feel like with derbies, nothing really compares. It’s always nice to go and compete against Manchester United.

“They’re always thrilling games. We’re going to make sure that we’re in the best possible position to compete and go there and hopefully take points from them.”

In our clashes with the Red Devils, City have scored a staggering 41 goals, whilst United have found the back of the net 26 times.

Hemp has scored five goals against Manchester United in all competitions.

And when asked to take a trip down memory lane to pick her favourite of the bunch, one in particular sprung to mind.

“I’d probably say, it must have been a couple of years ago now, it was at Old Trafford,” began Hemp.

“I think we won like 3-1. I remember that was the last time that I did a knee slide as well. So yeah, that was a special day.

“Obviously doing it at Old Trafford and beating them, it kind of gives an even more special feeling to do a knee slide in front of all the fans.

“But yeah, I feel like Derby days do hit different sometimes, so it’s nice to be involved in games like that.”

Part of what makes games such as derby days so special is the unwavering support from the fans at the fixtures.

And it doesn’t go unnoticed, often helping the team go the extra mile.

“The fans have been exceptional this season and throughout the rest of my time at City,” Hemp continued.

“It’s incredible to see so many people turning up to games, cheering us on, supporting us through every single minute of the matches and for us as players it doesn’t go unnoticed and we appreciate it a lot and we hope to see many more fans coming to our matches in the future because I promise we put on a good show.

“Their support so far has been immense and we appreciate it a lot so thank you to every fan that comes to every match.”
