FA Youth Cup preview: Portsmouth v City

FA Youth Cup

FA Youth Cup

City enter the FA Youth Cup at the Third Round stage on Tuesday when they travel to Fratton Park to take on Portsmouth, 7pm kick off (GMT).

Jason Wilcox’s side will be looking to go one step further than last year when they lost 5-2 on aggregate against Chelsea in the two-legged final.

The young Blues started last year’s campaign against a team from a similar level to the one they face on Tuesday night.

City beat League Two side Oxford United before turning on the style against Coventry City, progressing with an 8-2 win.

Two more wins followed against Stoke City and Crewe to claim City’s place in the last four and a two-legged game against Leicester City.

Aaron Nemane’s double in 3-0 win in the first leg all but sealed a place in the final before City secured their place with a 2-1 win at the King Power Stadium.

Chelsea overcame City in the final, picking up the trophy after beating City 3-1 at the Academy Stadium and 2-1 at Stamford Bridge – Isaac Buckley and Kelechi Iheanacho with the goals for City.

Portsmouth are currently seventh in the Youth Alliance South West Division after their 3-0 win over Yeovil last weekend and will be looking to cause one of the shocks of the round on Tuesday night.

Pompey defeated Plymouth Argyle in the First Round proper to set up a tie with fellow League Two side, Bristol Rovers. The game finished 3-3 after-extra-time with Portsmouth goalkeeper Alex Bass the hero, saving two penalties to help his side progress into the Third Round.

A win for City tomorrow will set up a Fourth Round tie away to Brentford or Leeds United.
