Taylor: We wanted to reward the fans

Gareth Taylor says he and the City players are devastated they were unable to celebrate the long-awaited return of fans with a victory.

Wednesday night welcomed supporters back to the Academy Stadium for the first time in 18 months, as a vocal home following turned out to cheer the side on.

However, City were unable to mark the occasion on a positive note, falling to defeat at the hands of Real Madrid and suffering elimination from the Champions League - and Taylor expressed his disappointment.

"We all do [want more nights like this]," he admitted. "The support was great - it was great to be back with a crowd behind us.

"We’re just disappointed we didn't give them what we wanted - a victory and more nights like this."

City have little time to dwell on the setback, hosting Tottenham Hotspur at the Academy Stadium on Sunday in the FA Women's Super League before the squad break for international duty.

Taylor says the quick turnaround will help, with the players eager to make amends at the first available opportunity.

"When you have difficult moments, it’s hard to take in any conversation from myself but that was in my thoughts," he added.

"We had good moments and these are the moments we need to take and make sure we get a good rest, bounce back on Sunday and get three points."
