Five years of Pep: the boss’ City highlights

Pep Guardiola was unveiled as Manchester City manager on this day five years ago.

The Catalan came to the Club with a formidable winning reputation after hugely successful stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich respectively.

His free-flowing, high intensity brand of football has dazzled and delighted in equal measure across his 294 matches in the hotseat so far.

While his debut season at the helm wasn't able to yield any silverware, huge statements were made in a Manchester Derby victory at Old Trafford and against Barcelona in the Champions League.

But things really started to click in 2017/18, when City claimed the Carabao Cup, our first trophy under Guardiola’s tutelage, and completed a domestic double by reaching an unprecedented 100 points in the Premier League.

However, rather than basking in the glory of a watershed campaign at the helm, the boss and City went even further in the following season to claim a domestic clean sweep of the Community Shield, Carabao Cup, FA Cup and league title.

A 4-1 victory over Brighton on the final day ensured we pipped Liverpool by a point to become the first side to retain the Premier League in a decade, helped in no small part by a crucial 2-1 win over the Reds in January 2019.

Another Carabao Cup triumph followed in March 2020 in a season curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, before we once again broke new ground in our most recent campaign.

Another domestic double, where we defended the Carabao Cup and reclaimed the Premier League title, was facilitated by an incredible 21-match winning run in all competitions, as City swept all before us once again.
