Northwest Football Awards: Houghton retains Women's Player of the Season crown
Steph Houghton has been named Women's Player of the Season at the Northwest Football Awards for the second successive year.

The City and England captain has retained her crown - further recognition for her contribution, after she claimed the Club's Etihad Player of the Season award back in July.

Adored for her commitment, leadership and consummate professionalism, the skipper featured in every single game of City's 2019/20 campaign. As ever, she led by example as the ultimate role model for budding footballers - female or male.

The defender edged out stiff competition to clinch the 2020 Northwest award in Blackburn's Saffron Jordan, Burnley's Lauren Bracewell, Liverpool's Rachel Furness and Manchester United's Lauren James, who scooped the Rising Star gong.

Ever humble, she expressed her sincere gratitude.

"I just want to say a big 'thank you' for all of your votes and also to the judging panel for selecting me as the Northwest Player of the Year," she smiled.

"I'm gutted we can't have an actual evening together but I'm looking forward to next year's.

"Stay safe and well and we'll see you all soon."

Houghton has already made history in the 2020/21 campaign, becoming the first player to register 100 wins in the FA Women's Super League.

The England captain, Olympian, World Cup bronze medallist and MBE has rewritten the history books throughout her career and has played an integral role in City's trophy success since signing for the Club on New Year's Day 2014.

She lifted her seventh piece of silverware with the Club earlier this month, holding aloft the Women's FA Cup for the third time.
