Mewis joined City in the summer from North Carolina Courage having played a key role in the United States’ 2019 World Cup triumph.
She played in eight of the nine games for the US national team in 2020, starting six, and scoring four goals, all coming at the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament where she scored back-to-back braces against Costa Rica and Mexico.
Mewis also put in a strong performance at the NWSL Challenge Cup, playing in all five games for the North Carolina Courage before making the move to City in early August.
And her first four months at City have been excellent. In 17 matches across all competitions, she has scored six goals - three in the league, two in the FA Cup and one in Champions League.
The 28-year-old says it’s a privilege to have been voted the best US player, and paid tribute to those who have helped her reach the top of the game.
“It’s obviously a huge honour to be a part of the list of players that have won this award in the past,” said Mewis.
“It should go without saying that it’s the team that does the work on the field and I just have so much respect for the other nominees this year and all my teammates. I’ve just loved playing with them on the US Team, and with my teammates for the Courage and Man City.
“It’s still such an honour to even get called into a US camp, to get playing time and to be able to score goals for my country. All that continues to be surreal to me. I owe so much to so many people who have helped me on my journey and any individual award is a credit to them.”
One of five finalists for the Female Player of the Year award, Mewis garnered 45 percent of the tabulated votes, followed by Crystal Dunn (29 percent) and Lindsey Horan (11 percent).
The US Soccer Female Player of the Year has been awarded since 1985, when midfielder Sharon Remer earned the first Female Athlete of the Year honour. Abby Wambach won it six times, the most of any player. Mia Hamm won it five times.
Votes for US Soccer Female Player of the Year awards are collected from respective National Team coaches, National Team players who earned a cap in 2020, members of the US Soccer Board of Directors, US Soccer Athletes’ Council, National Women’s Soccer League head coaches, select media members and administrators. In addition, select college coaches vote for US Soccer’s Female Player of the Year award.
