The 2026/27 Barclays Women’s Super League season is just days away!

City come into the campaign as reigning WSL champions and start our defence of the title against Birmingham City on Sunday 6 September at 14:30 (UK).

Home is where the heart is 

There’s no place like home and, last season, it’s somewhere we boasted a phenomenal record. 

City won all of our 11 games at the Joie and Etihad Stadium in the WSL last term for the first time and lost only once at home in all competitions. 

Then, in pre-season, we also played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with European champions FC Barcelona at the Joie thanks to goals from Alex Greenwood and Grace Clinton. 

If that’s anything to go by, we could be in for another excellent season at home, especially if we’re backed all the way by our loud and loyal fans.

Double trouble 

Of course, we didn’t just win the WSL title last season, with City completing a league and FA Cup double across 2025/26 – the first time we’ve won both in the same campaign. 

And both trophies will be displayed in all their glory at the Joie Stadium when we take on Birmingham, just as they were against FC Barcelona. 

If you missed getting a glimpse of them earlier this month, this is the perfect chance to celebrate last season’s historic double! 

New faces at the Joie 

Our game against Birmingham could provide fans with a chance to see our new signings in competitive action for the first time. 

England internationals Beth Mead and Niamh Charles both joined the Club this summer from Arsenal and Chelsea respectively and, with the transfer window still open until Thursday 3 September, there’s every chance you could be cheering on some other new stars.  

Pre-season has also provided some of our exciting Next Gen stars to showcase their talents… could any of our youngsters also be involved against Birmingham? 

Away from the pitch 

City were once again recognised for having the best matchday experience in the WSL and this is your chance to see why. 

As well as the WSL and FA Cup trophies being on display, our usual blend of exciting activities for kids and adults alike as well as the City pre-match quiz, a new fanzone will also be available to enjoy behind the South Stand, offering a swathe of food and drink options and activations. 

A reminder also that, after a successful trial last season, adults can enjoy alcoholic drinks in the stands, so there’s something for everyone at the Joie. 

Fresh opponents 

After four years outside the top division, Birmingham City are back in the WSL, and we’ll be the first team to see what they can do. 

Last season, they finished as WSL 2 champions on goal difference, winning the title on a thrilling final day, and have already made several signings to bolster their squad this summer, including former City goalkeeper Katie Startup. 

We faced them en route to FA Cup glory last season, with Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw’s strike earning a hard-fought 1-0 win at St Andrew’s – and a similar test is expected this time round. 

All of that means that, alongside all of the offerings which made our matchday experience the best in the land last season, there are plenty of new features to enjoy as we kick off our title defence – so make sure to get your tickets!
