And Jeglertz says his team are ready to challenge again, even if the competition as a whole is now stronger too.
“It’s the best league in the world and the best players. And if more teams are emphasising their teams financially, that’s only going to be good,” he said.
“It’s not about them, it’s about us. We’re stronger than last year, and we need to show that, winning one year is one thing but winning the next is something else.
“We’re still chasing to win again. When you start protecting things it won’t help us. We need to have that hunger to win again and compete in different tournaments.
“Nothing has changed even though we have a confidence of knowing if we do what we did last year we have a great opportunity to win the league again but if we drop again in performance or attitude, teams will go past us.
“But we know if we do at least the things we did last year we have a great opportunity for a good result this year too.”
One player unavailable for selection is Vivianne Miedema.
The Dutch international sustained a knee injury over the summer and will miss the start of the campaign.
“I hope to have her back tomorrow but that’s not possible,” said Jeglertz when asked about a potential return date for his No.10.
“Definitely it’s tough for her of course to get this, and for us. But her determination is to get back as quick as possible and the same for us.
“We need to keep assessing that from week to week but we’re fully aware she’ll be out for this fall, and then we’ll see where we end up later. But we don’t expect her back in the coming weeks.”
Rebecca Knaak will also sit out the season opener but Jeglertz is more positive about the defender’s prognosis.
“She got a hit on her foot and that is something we’re assessing also. She’s not going to be available for the weekend but let’s see how we progress next week,” he said.
Pressed for further updates about the fitness of his players, Jeglertz gave more information on Jade Rose, Grace Clinton and Niamh Charles.
“Jade is definitely training fully again with the team. Grace Clinton was back in training today but Niamh is a big question mark for the weekend,” he said.
City completed our summer transfer window with the loan signing of England international goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse during Thursday’s deadline day.
That leaves three senior shot stoppers in Jeglertz’s squad, with Moorhouse joining Ayaka Yamashita and Eartha Cumings.
The boss says he won’t pick a number one, with all three capable of playing no matter the competition or status of the opposition.
“Goalkeepers always have a number one but nobody else! For us she’s [Moorhouse] great, it was a hectic last few days, but with her experience, background, she will be very good for us. Looking forward to starting to work with her.
“The goalkeepers compete every day, it was like that last year and will be this year also.
“Every week has to be an opportunity for them to show their quality and show they’re ready to contribute.
“We play more games so the challenge will be the same as central midfielders or centre backs, they need to deal with that which I’m 100% these ones are ready to go.
“No matter which goalkeeper we pick on Sunday, it’ll be a new week next week. That’s how I see the goalkeepers.”
