Sterling scores 1000th Etihad goal - or so we thought...

Raheem Sterling’s tap in to seal our 3-0 win over Marseille on Wednesday was the 1,000th goal we’ve scored at the Etihad Stadium.

However, the goal was officially credited later as an Alvaro Gonzalez own goal, denying Sterling a notable milestone.

Ah, well!

City made the move from Maine Road to what was then called the City of Manchester Stadium back in 2003, with Trevor Sinclair’s goal in August of that year against TNS the first one scored at our East Manchester home.

A further 999 have followed, and none more famous than Sergio Aguero’s winner against QPR that sealed our first league title in 44 years in dramatic circumstances in May 2012.

In total, we’ve now bagged 1,000 goals in 444 Etihad matches at a rate of 2.25 goals per game.

Indeed, we have officially scored 1,002 'home' goals during that period - but two of those came at Oakwell against EB Streymur in the UEFA Cup in 2008 when the pitch at the Etihad was being re-laid.

It marks the latest milestone in a week of significant landmarks for City after Pep Guardiola celebrated his 250th City game as we beat Fulham on Saturday.

Here's to a thousand more!
