On This Day: Anelka's spot on in Europe, City hit pole position

Looking back at games, moments or events that occurred on this day in our history....

October 15th

2003: It had been a long time since the majority of City fans had last tasted European football abroad, so it was no surprise that almost half the 10,000 crowd at Lokeren’s tiny Daknamstadion for our UEFA Cup second round, second leg encounter were from Manchester.

The tie was keenly balanced after a 3-2 City win at the City of Manchester Stadium and Lokeren clearly fancied their chances, as they sought a victory that would see them into the next round.

As it was the match was settled by an Nicolas Anelka penalty and the majority of the Blue Army headed to Brussels airport hoping for more memorable European adventures.

2011: City took advantage of Manchester United's draw at Liverpool to move top of the Premier League with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Etihad.

City keeper Joe Hart saved well from Gabriel Agbonlahor early on before Mario Balotelli scored with a superb overhead kick to put us in front.

A Stephen Warnock error let us strike again and Vincent Kompany then headed home to extend the advantage.

Warnock pulled one back but James Milner curled a fine fourth.

2016: Maarten Stekelenburg saved two penalties for Everton as City were forced to settle for a point at the Etihad Stadium.

Kevin de Bruyne was the first to miss in the opening period, seeing the Dutch goalkeeper push his effort away, and Sergio Aguero saw the same outcome in the second half.

Despite dominating possession, City went behind as Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring with a cool finish.

Nolito headed in from David Silva's inch-perfect cross, but De Bruyne had a drive brilliantly saved by Stekelenburg, as City failed to find the winner.
