Goals from Edin Dzeko and Yaya Toure give Manuel Pellegrini’s side three crucial points and leave City three points behind Liverpool with a game in hand and just three matches to play.

It means that thee more victories will almost guarantee City the title.

Needing a victory of improbable proportions and a freak set of results in other games in order to stay up, Manchester United fans trundle into Old Trafford knowing they were unlikely to remain in the top flight - and Denis Law’s audacious back heel condemns them to a 1-0 defeat. 

Despite the match not reaching its conclusion due to a pitch invasion, the officials agree that the result stands despite there being a few minutes of the game still to play.

Legendary goalkeeper Frank Swift announces that the game against Arsenal will be his last for City at Maine Road with retirement imminent.

Swift was keen to bow out at the top and is carried off the pitch by adoring fans at the final whistle, despite losing the game. Due to a number of goalkeeping issues the following season, however, Swift is persuaded to play a few more games for City, meaning his retirement was not as ‘final’ as he’d hoped!

With both teams seeking to secure the fourth Champions League berth, neither side manages to break the deadlock and United are reduced to 10 men for the last six minutes as Marouane Fellaini is red carded for a headbutt on Sergio Aguero.
