Oleksandr Zinchenko: Top spot would be a confidence boost

Oleksandr Zinchenko says returning to the top of the Premier League table would give Manchester City confidence, as he targets success on all fronts.

Pep Guardiola’s side are currently on a 15-match unbeaten run in all competitions and go into Wednesday night’s game against Aston Villa knowing victory would send us top of the league.

It could well prove temporary, with current leaders Manchester United due to kick-off two hours after us, but Zinchenko believes leading from the front is to be embraced.

“It is a great opportunity for us, to win tomorrow and be back on the top of the league,” he said.

“It will give us more confidence I would say.

“It is a really nice feeling to be at the top of the table and everyone misses this. That is what we need and that is what we want.”

Injury limited Zinchenko’s involvement earlier in the season, but the Ukrainian is back to full fitness and has started our last three league games.

In the midst of such good form, the full-back admits there is a positive mood in the City camp, particularly given our brilliant defensive displays, though he feels improvements are needed in the final third, despite rediscovering our scoring touch against Crystal Palace.

“Definitely I would say we are (enjoying our football),” he added.

“Like for any defender, after the final whistle and you have a clean sheet, it is the perfect day. When it is three points it is even better.

“The feeling is really good. We are on the right way but we still have to improve a lot of things, especially closer to the opponents target because we have to score more.

“We are really creating a lot of chances but in the final third we have to do better.”

Just four points separate the top five in the Premier League and there is already talk of the emerging title race.

With 2020/21 proving to be a season of unpredictability, Zinchenko says all City can do is focus on our own performance, but he admits there is a collective desire to be successful on multiple fronts, something he feels the squad is capable of achieving.

“Inside the team, everyone is hungry for more,” said the 24-year-old. “We want to win all the titles this season and we are ready for it.

“I would like to win the Premier League and Champions League, that is my target. It is my dream from when I was a kid.

“Of course, we already won the Premier League twice but we always want more.

"Three times is better than two and the Champions League is a dream for every football player as well.”
