De Bruyne outstanding as Belgium top Group B with maximum points
Kevin De Bruyne starred as Belgium beat Finland 2-0 in Saint Petersburg to top Group B and ease into the last 16 of Euro 2020.

The 29-year-old was a threat throughout and appeared to have assisted the opener when his outstanding throughball allowed Romelu Lukaku to fire home – but a VAR check saw the goal disallowed for offside.

But moments later, De Bruyne’s beautifully delivered corner found Thomas Vermaelen, whose header came back off the woodwork, hit Lukas Hradecky and went in.

And the recently-crowned PFA Player of the Year was at the heart of Belgium’s second, assisting Lukaku with another fine pass.

It was De Bruyne’s second stand-out display of the tournament. Having missed Belgium’s opening fixture against Russia through injury, he came off the bench to change their second game, scoring the winner and producing an assist to help Roberto Martinez’s side fight back to beat Denmark 2-1.

The win over Finland means Belgium have a 100 percent record so far in the tournament and head into the last 16 as favourites to lift the trophy.

Elsewhere in Group B, Denmark defeated Russia 4-1 to finish second and set up a last-16 encounter with Wales on Saturday.
