Stones thrilled to see Aguero back scoring

John Stones was delighted to see Sergio Aguero back on the scoresheet after the Argentine hit his first league goal in more than a year as Manchester City beat Fulham 3-0.

The Club’s record goalscorer converted a 60th minute penalty to wrap up the three points after Stones and Gabriel Jesus had put Pep Guardiola’s side in front at Craven Cottage.

Having endured a lengthy battle with injury and illness, Aguero had not found the net in the Premier League since January 2020 and seeing him back amongst the goals was a moment to celebrate for City’s No.5.

“I’m so pleased for him,” Stones told

“He’s been out for so long and to have him back scoring is what we want and what all City fans want too!

“He’s worked hard to get back and I’m so happy he got his goal.”

It was a good day all round for Stones, who enjoyed success at both ends of the pitch as he helped City to a 16th clean sheet in the league.

The England international played alongside Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte in defence as Guardiola sprung a surprise with his team selection by deviating from his favoured four-man back line.

City took time to find their stride in the capital, but Stones was impressed with how the league leaders adapted to the new system against a Fulham side who last just one of their previous seven games.

“I think we did really well considering it’s something we’d not tried in a while,” he added.

“Obviously we’ve worked on it this week in training but to go out there and implement it as well as we did is never easy to do.

“Considering we got the clean sheet and scored three goals at a tricky place to come, I thought it was really impressive.

“They made it tough, especially in the first half, but in the end we got the job done and that’s what matters.”
