Brown: 'Dangerous' Spurs will be a different side

Michael Brown expects to see a different Spurs side from the one beaten by City at the Etihad Stadium a fortnight ago.

Antonio Conte’s team were beaten 4-2 in January when goals from Julian Alvarez, Erling Haaland and two from Riyad Mahrez capped a stunning second-half turnaround.

But Tottenham have won both their games since then – 1-0 away to Fulham in the Premier League and 3-0 at Preston in the FA Cup.

And they have also added attacking full-back Pedro Porro, from Sporting CP, and forward Arnaut Danjuma, from Villarreal, to their squad during the January transfer window.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has also not been a happy hunting ground for City since it opened in with four defeats and no goals at the venue.

“Spurs have looked to strengthen [in the window] so you might be looking at a slightly different Spurs side and we saw how dangerous they are when they played at the Etihad a couple of weeks ago,” former City and Tottenham midfielder Brown said.

“They can score goals so it will be another fascinating game and at Tottenham’s magnificent stadium it’s such a great place to play football.”

But City are also on a run of three successive victories and Brown added that there is no reason why they shouldn’t go to London with confidence.

“It was a great turnaround performance against Spurs,” he added. “And from Spurs’ perspective from a psychological point of view, they would have thought: ‘we had it and then been blown away so how do we approach it?’

“I think it’s a great game and I do think psychologically City can go straight into it with no fear and I don’t think Spurs will want this game.”

Shaun Goater also believes that Pep Guardiola’s side will be buoyed by the victory over Premier League leaders Arsenal in the FA Cup, with the Gunners winning the North London derby at Tottenham’s home earlier in January.

“One of the big pleasing things about the Arsenal win was a clean sheet and they asked questions of us,” Goater said.

“Arsenal really pushed us and I think Tottenham will have looked at that and have gone ‘Wow’ so they will know they will have to be at their best if they are to get anything from the game.”

And Paul Dickov added: “I think we’ll take a lot of confidence from the game a couple of weeks ago when we blew them away in the second half.

“Since then, we have beaten Wolves and then Arsenal so we will go there with a lot of confidence.”

Goater also believes that Guardiola will have a plan to stop the dangerous Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son who starred in the win over Preston scoring twice.

“Harry Kane we know he’s going to drop deep, and we also know how lethal he is if he gets the opportunity,” he said.

“We’ve played them enough times and I think Pep will look and have a plan for Harry Kane and Son so it’s another tough one.

“But I think we will take the confidence from last Friday’s game. We played [and beat] the team who are top of the table and who really tried to push us.”
