Aymeric Laporte makes Spain debut in stalemate

Aymeric Laporte made his international debut as Spain drew 0-0 with Portugal in their penultimate warm-up game ahead of Euro 2020.

The Manchester City defender was named in the final 26-man squad last month after having his switch from France approved by FIFA and completed 79 minutes on his first run out for La Roja.

Joao Cancelo, Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva were not involved for Portugal, but Ferran Torres started alongside Laporte in Madrid, where both sides had chances to win the game.

The visitors saw a first half goal ruled out after Jose Fonte was adjudged to have fouled Pau Torres and City’s Torres was heavily involved in Spain’s best moments.

He headed wide from Alvaro Morata’s superb cross before the break and dragged an effort wide after a good run inside took him past two defenders, but his best chance of the game came in the dying minutes when he got the slightest of touches on Koke’s free-kick only to be denied by a smart reaction save from Rui Patricio.

Rodrigo and the departing Eric Garcia were both introduced just past the hour mark for Luis Enrique’s men, who could have won the game in added time when Morata broke clear only to see his effort cannon back off the crossbar.

Spain face Lithuania in their final pre-tournament friendly on Tuesday, whilst Portugal will host Israel on Wednesday before they begin their defence of the European Championship title they won in 2016.
