'Mahrez is best winger in Europe' says former City skipper

'Mahrez is best winger in Europe' says former City skipper
Andy Morrison says there is no better winger in European football than Riyad Mahrez on current form.

The silky-skilled Algerian was again outstanding in the 5-2 win over Southampton with two superb goals and an indirect assist for Ilkay Gundogan.

The mesmeric winger has now scored 10 goals this season and was recently described as ‘unplayable’ by another ex-City player, Michael Brown.

Speaking on the Southampton We’re Not Really Here matchday show, Morrison said: “He’s been an outstanding player over the past few months and been the most predominant to stay in the team.

“Yes, Pep rotates the team, but he has stayed.

“His first goal came from Che Adams’ mistake, but there was still so much to do -you still need incredible technique and quality to be able to do what he does.

Mahrez is an absolute pleasure to watch and in those areas I don’t think there’s anyone better in the Premier League in one-on-one situations, he rips you to bits.

“You know where he’s going to go but when somebody’s that good and the disguise is that good, you can’t stop it. As I say, he’s a pleasure to watch at the moment.”

1999 play-off captain Morrison also believes Mahrez deserves recognition from his peers at the end of the season.

Mahrez was voted the PFA Players' Player of the Year in 2016, and Morrison believes he is now playing just as well.

“I hope he gets the recognition he merits,” he said.

“There’s still a long way to go this season, but he’s been in a purple patch over the last few months and you don’t hear people talk about it.

“He has been incredible, especially since the turn of the year and there’s not a better player in the Premier league at this moment in time or across Europe that's producing what he is every single week.”

Shaun Goater echoed Morrison’s praise.

“What I like about him is that he does some quick feet, shifts from left to right and he’s so exciting to watch,” he said.

“It’s always an immaculate control and you think how do you stop him? He’s not the strongest player physically, but by god does he have a great pass, the vision for quality crosses and we know how deadly he is with his left foot .

“How do you stop him? You really have to have him facing away from goal to have any chance. He’s on brilliant form.”
