Jen Beattie asserts City should take real encouragement from the Women’s Champions League semi-final first leg display against Lyon.

The Blues held the European Champions to a goalless draw at the Academy Stadium, denying the French outfit an away goal with a valiant team performance.

Beattie – one of the many star performers – was proud of her side’s determination to keep a clean sheet against the continent’s best and urged Nick Cushing’s troops to make their toil count.

“No-one is unbeatable,” she stated.

“We’re really happy to have earned a clean sheet against a really top side, going into the second leg.

“For them not to have scored an away goal, we’re obviously happy with that. They have so much quality.

“We knew they have so much fluidity within their play and that they’re so creative, playing one-touch, two-touch football all the time. They’re a really strong side.

“All European teams are improving at the minute. It’s something Clubs are trying to develop and Lyon will just get better and better. You have to accept that.

“They had a few chances but we did well to shut up shop and Karen Bardsley made some great saves as well.”

With the added incentive of an away goal, City will need to showcase more of the creative side in France in a bid to reach a first European final.

“We’ll need to take our chances a bit better,” Beattie continued. “A clean sheet is brilliant but we need that edge and we need to be better with our decision-making in the final third.

“We need to be able to keep the ball a little longer – that’s what we’ll try to do.”
