Asllani: It’s not over yet

SUPER SWEDE: Kosovare Asllani celebrates her goal against Lyon

SUPER SWEDE: Kosovare Asllani celebrates her goal against Lyon

Kosovare Asllani has urged Man City Women not to lose hope of reaching the Champions League final.

Nick Cushing’s side fell to a 3-1 defeat to reigning champions Lyon in the semi-final first leg at the Academy Stadium.

Asllani found the net for the Blues, cancelling out Saki Kumagai’s opener from the penalty spot, and she believes her side are capable of securing a positive result in the return leg to progress.

“It’s not over yet,” she asserted. “We have a second leg and I have huge belief we can turn it around.

“It will take a huge performance for us to win away next week but I believe in this team and I hope everyone does.

“We will do everything we can and play our hearts out there. We want nothing more than to reach the final.”

With City in their debut campaign in Europe, the Blues headed into the tie as underdogs against a practiced and star-studded Lyon side.

Asllani reflected it was the visitors’ experience that proved the difference.

“You can see it,” she conceded. “We didn’t get the best start to the game. We had a penalty against us but it felt like we created chances.

“It’s important to score a goal right after conceding one but we still need to keep going and not lose the belief.

“You can’t lose the faith in our philosophy. We have to put pressure on them so that they make mistakes we can use.

“They are the favourites but I still believe we can turn it around.”
