Gallery: Champions League agony for brave City

Manchester City’s Champions League challenge ended in heart-breaking fashion at the Etihad as Pep Guardiola’s side went out to Tottenham on away goals in a dramatic quarter-final second leg tie.

MATCH REPORT: City 4 (4) - 3 (4) Spurs

Though City secured a 4-3 win on the night, to level the tie at 4-4, the visitors went through on away goals.

In one of the most dramatic matches seen at the Etihad in years, five goals were shared out in a pulsating first 21 minutes.

Raheem Sterling had fired City in a sensational early lead before twin strikes by Son fired the visitors into a 2-1 lead on the night and 3-1 on aggregate.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side drew level almost immediately through a Danny Rose own goal before Sterling struck again converting from close range after a brilliant Kevin De Bruyne cross.

It still left City needing to score again to progress through to the semi-finals and Sergio Aguero answered the call lashing home a wonderful near-post strike.

The drama continued though as Spurs struck again through substitute Fernando Llorente to put the visitors back in front on away goals with the effort being allowed after being checked with the VAR.

There was one final cruel twist in the tale however as Raheem Sterling looked to have won us the game in the 93rd minute with a sensational strike – only for the effort to be disallowed for offside by VAR.
