Former players are the focal point of the first Media Watch of the week, as both Francis Lee and Martin Keown share their thoughts in Monday’s newspapers.

The Manchester City legend is loving watching the present day Blues, while the ex-Arsenal man has penned his appreciation for the burgeoning partnership between Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus.

Elsewhere, there’s more praise for the Argentine as Kevin De Bruyne has his say on his team-mate’s goal scoring exploits.

We’ll start with a striker from yesteryear and so impressed is Lee by Pep Guardiola’s team, he believes the Catalan is a manager every player – including himself – would love to play for.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, the Club’s former chairman said: “This Pep Guardiola team, though, is the best level of football I have ever seen from City and it is only going to get better.

“City are playing at an unbelievable level and it’s mesmerising to watch. Our 1968 side were very good and we played open, attractive football but it was direct.

“With Pep, they are happier to go around the houses and the football is sublime. I’d love to have played under him — every player past or present would say the same.”

It’s City’s South American strike pairing which has caught the eye of Keown, who, as a former defender, feels he knows why the partnership is proving to be so fruitful.

“Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus are so effective because they are exploiting the fact that central defenders are used to playing against one centre forward, not two,” he told The Mail.

“When Kevin De Bruyne gets into the pockets of space behind the midfield, a central defender has to choose whether to close down the Belgian or stick with his striker.

“It means that Aguero and Jesus have more time and space when De Bruyne and David Silva put them through.”

Finally, the man so often the architect of Aguero’s goals has revealed his delight as the Blues’ No.10 approaches the Club’s scoring record.

Quoted in the Daily Star, De Bruyne said: “Sergio’s record speaks for itself – it’s not just 30 or 40 goals, it’s 175, which is unbelievable at this level and hopefully he won’t stop there.

“He’s still two or three away, but when the moment comes to break the record it will be a nice achievement for him.”
