We may be in the depths of the Christmas period but it hasn’t stopped the media speculating about Manchester City’s potential transfer activity.

The gossip is intensifying ahead of the January window opening – but, first, let’s start with an article in the Express that suggests City have assembled a squad that could dominate English football for years to come.

Richard Tanner believes City’s transfer policy in recent seasons means we have a top-class young squad capable of wining a series of major honours.

“They have a team to set to dominate like neighbours Manchester United did in the past,” Tanner writes.

“They have steadily released many of the ‘old guard’ that brought the club two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups.

“Now they have a vibrant team where many of the key players are under 25 and have their best years ahead of them.”

Meanwhile, the Star say City are leading the race to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

“Manchester City are racing ahead in the race for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk,” writes Rhys Turrell.

“Liverpool and Chelsea like him too but the Manchester giants are now leading the race for the ex-Celtic man.

“It’s claimed the runaway Premier League leaders are already in talks with Saints over a January deal.”

And, finally, Jack Gaughan, writing in the Mail, believes City are interested in two midfielders.

Pep Guardiola has an interest in Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred as Manchester City plan to bolster their midfield options next summer,” he writes

“The 24-year-old starred for the Ukrainian champions during last month’s Champions League victory over City.

“Guardiola was left impressed with Fred and talks have taken place internally as to whether they make a move in the coming months. City have also watched Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl.”
