The international break has done little to keep City out of the headlines, with skipper Vincent Kompany's latest fitness update, boss Pep Guardiola's verdict on the stunnning CFA, plus a Kelechi Iheanacho wonder-strike all featuring in Sunday morning's press reports...

First to Belgian defender Kompany, who the Daily Express report “could face Manchester United at Old Trafford next weekend”.

According to the paper, Guardiola said: “I am surprised by how much he is a fighter. He is working morning and afternoon. He is a big professional so in that sense I don’t panic. But still he is not (in full) training.

“He has trained on some things with us but in terms of being competitive, in terms of the games and contact and duels, he won’t until he is ready. What is important is the doctor told me now his muscle is clean.”

The manager has also spoken of just how impressed he is with the facilities at City Football Academy following his opening batch of 2016-17 matches.

The Daily Mai’s Joe Bernstein reports: “Guardiola’s showdown with his old foe Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford next Saturday will be eagerly anticipated across the world.

“And though he will be without star striker Sergio Aguero – banned retrospectively for three matches after elbowing West Ham’s Winston Reid last weekend – Guardiola says his squad will be the best-prepared team in Europe.

“‘We have everything we need to work. The players can not complain. They have absolutely everything to help them to be ready to play,’ he said.

“‘To win or lose is another thing because the opponent can be better, but here there are no excuses. If we are not ready or fit, it is because we are not good enough.

“‘I have never seen facilities like this. It is a big compliment for the chairman, for the people of Abu Dhabi and of course the people at Manchester City.’”

Elsewhere and Kelechi Iheanacho scored a wonder-goal to secure a 1-0 victory for Nigeria over Tanzania in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo on Saturday.

A report on the Confederation of African Football’s official site read: “Striker Kelechi Iheanacho struck a superb winner against Tanzania to power Nigeria to victory in their Group G Day 6 clash on Saturday in Uyo.

“The victory gave new Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr a winning start to his role at the helm of the West Africans.

“Thousands of fans who thronged the stadium to watch the dead rubber encounter had to wait till the 78th minute before the Manchester City forward scored the winner with a powerful left foot shot from the edge of the box for the only goal of the match.”

Finally it has been widely reported that John Stones and Raheem Sterling are set to start for England in this evening’s World Cup qualifier in Slovakia.

In quotes carried by the BBC new boss Sam Allardyce said: “I think in every new job, you’re nervous.

“But you’re hoping the players will do the talking for you, that when they walk over that white line they’ll deliver what we all want and that’s the victory.”
