Yaya Toure at half time during the spectacular Champions League victory over Borussia Monchengladbach will inspire the team to make history in the knockout stages of the competition.

“Toure delivered a rousing half-time team talk during their Champions League tie with Borussia Monchengladbach, when City were trailing 2-1” report the Daily Star.

“And (Sterling) then went on to produce a two-goal match-winning performance to fire City into the round of 16 - a stage they are yet to get beyond - as winners.

“But Sterling believes that statistic is going to be obliterated.

“He said: “The team really dug deep and showed great character to come from behind and win.

“”There was a great connection in the dressing room with the team talk from Yaya and the boys.

“”It’s now a matter of time and to keep working at it as a team. The teamwork is paying off and hopefully we can carry that on.””

Vincent Kompany celebrates his goal against Chelsea

The Manchester Evening News’ Anthony Jepson has his say on why Vincent Kompany’s return to action can’t come soon enough for the Blues.

“Manuel Pellegrini may have raised a few eyebrows among Manchester City fans when he claimed the Blues’ defence is ‘doing well’ without skipper Vincent Kompany.

“To be fair to the City chief, he qualified his statement by saying: “This team is better with Vincent of course.”

“And he made it before Swansea’s attack had raised further questions about the Blues’ backline by scoring at the Etihad on Saturday.

“Pellegrini was forced to pair Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi together at centre-back against the Welshmen in Kompany’s continued absence.

“And again, the duo were less than convincing as City won 2-1.

“It is unrealistic to expect Pellegrini to publicly criticise any of his players, let alone ones he shelled out a combined £74million on.

“But the way the diminutive Wayne Routledge outmuscled Otamendi early in the game won’t have impressed the Chilean.

“And the manner in which Baftimbi Gomis left Mangala looking lost for Swansea’s goal was equally worrying.

“Both players have their qualities, but both look infinitely better with Kompany beside them.

“City have kept seven clean sheets in the eight Premier League games the Belgian has played this season.

“They have not kept one in the eight he has missed.

“Pellegrini said on Friday he not expecting his skipper to be recovered from his calf injury in time for the clash with Arsenal a week on Monday.

“After a win over Swansea that owed as much to Joe Hart’s excellence as it did a fortuitous winner, the Blues boss could be forgiven for offering up a little prayer for an early Christmas miracle and a quicker return for his captain.”

The Mirror’s Football Spy reckons City are amongst the teams looking to rival Manchester United for Anderlecht’s highly-rated midfielder Youri Tielemans.

“The Red Devils sent scouts to watch the £30million-rated midfielder in action for Anderlecht in their Europa League clash against Qarabag.

“United face competition from Chelsea, Manchester City, Everton and Aston Villa for his signature, according to the Star .

“The 18-year-old has scored four goals in 22 games this season.

“Tielemans’ exploits have earned him a call-up to the Belgium squad and he could be named in the 23 for next summer’s Euro 2016 in France.”
