Sergio Aguero: We had to win

SERGE OF PACE: Sergio Aguero tussles for possession with John Egan
A win against Sheffield United was essential for Manchester City’s season according to forward Sergio Aguero.

The Argentine opened the scoring early in the second half with a powerful near post effort, before Kevin De Bruyne secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over the Blades in the 82nd minute following a swift counter.

Aguero believes the three points were vital as City look to close the gap on second-placed Leicester City and cement their place in the Premier League top four.

And despite conceding the title race may be over for Pep Guardiola’s men, our record goalscorer insists there is still plenty to play for come May.

“Today we had to win… I am so happy because we needed the three points,” he reflected after the win under the Etihad lights.

“Now Liverpool is too hard. We have to focus just on winning because we need to play Champions League next season.

“We have to play the same way and see what happens."

Aguero’s thunderous strike into the roof of the net was his 10th Premier League goal in just 15 appearances this season.

But irrespective of our Argentine’s typically clinical record this campaign, he was quick to highlight the contribution his teammates have made in reaching that tally so far, and over the course of his City career.

He said: “I am so happy but I play with good players, David Silva, Yaya Toure and now Kevin (De Bruyne).

“For me it’s so easy because I just have to focus on the goals.”
