Pep Guardiola praised his ‘consistent and solid’ Manchester City side after a well-earned point at Anfield.

The reigning champions regained top spot in the Premier League going into the international break after a fine 0-0 draw with Liverpool.

Riyad Mahrez had the chance to win it for City from the penalty spot late on but his effort went over the bar.

But Guardiola remained positive after what was the Blues’ first clean sheet away at Liverpool in the Premier League era kept our unbeaten start to the season intact.

“Well, we tried, the important thing is we tried,” he said.

“We didn’t concede many shots on target so this is key at Anfield and is quite special in terms of the environment.

“From all actions, from corners and free kicks, they’re so tall and are stronger than us but we defended well, the back four was so good in their positions.

“We played so well, so if you want to analyse the result then the result is okay, we could do better.

“At the end, the manager has to analyse what we have done when we plan what we have to do, that is the most important thing. We were consistent, we were solid.

“As a team you know they would punish our mistakes, and at the back four we controlled it very well. So, it would be better to win at Anfield, but we don’t lose, last season we lost here, this season we draw, maybe next season we win, we will see.”

The manager was also full of support for Mahrez and explained why the Algerian was handed the responsibility of taking the spot-kick.

“He had the courage and the balls to hit the penalty,” Pep said.

“In the training session he shoots perfect penalties, and okay, this sometimes happens, so at the end it is what it is.”
