When asked if City might reconsider given Benjamin Mendy’s expected 12-week absence, the Catalan said: “We don’t want anybody in January. We are not going to spend anything, I am so happy with the squad.

“When we created the squad at the beginning, we didn’t want to go for anyone in January unless there were injuries.

“I trust all the players and it’s a joy to be with them. We are not going to do any transfers in January, no way.

Pep also revealed Fernandinho is benefiting from not being in the recent Brazil squads.

CLASS ACT: Fernandinho

The Blues’ holding midfielder has been in excellent form this season and is one of the first names on the City team sheet.

The international breaks have enabled Ferna to stay fresh, but the manager says he will take opportunities to give him additional rest periods as and when needed over the busy festive period.

“He will need a rest, but he hasn’t been playing during the international break, so he has had days off.

“He can play, he can’t play for 10 or 11 games in a row - it’s impossible.

No. I’m the same in terms of direction from when I first arrived. I always think what is best for the team and best for the club. When I say something to players it’s because I think it’s good for everybody.”
