Croatia took the lead early in the second half through Andrej Kramarić, but two late strikes from Jesse Lingard and Harry Kane saw England move ahead.

England needed the win to move ahead of Spain and top Group A4, having registered a win, draw and loss heading into the game.

Southgate’s side will discover their semi-final opponents in the UEFA Nations League Finals draw which is set to take place in Dublin on 3 December, 2.30pm CET. The draw will feature the four League A group winners.

The finals will be hosted by Bernardo Silva's international side, Portugal, in June 2019 with the other two qualifiers to be confirmed.

Elsewhere, in the African Cup of Nations, Riyad Mahrez was in action for Algeria as they secured a 4-1 win over Togo to qualify for the next round. A brace from Mahrez helped his side to move top of their group and book their place in the finals in Cameroon next year.
