Loan watch: Celina secures win for Ipswich

Loan rangers...
Bersant Celina scored the winning goal for Ipswich Town during their 2-1 victory over Burton Albion.

The City loanee came on in the 84th minute for David McGoldrick following fans’ chants to bring him on the pitch.

After just five minutes into his appearance his stunning free-kick curled into the bottom right-hand corner of Connor Ripley’s goal to take Mick McCarthy’s side into the lead.

His fantastic strike was followed by a Ronaldo-like celebration and meant that Ipswich secured three points before their upcoming clash with Cardiff City.

Ipswich’s East Anglian rivals, Norwich City, weren’t as lucky with their Championship result at the weekend as the Canaries suffered a 2-1 defeat to Derby County.

On loan goalkeeper Angus Gunn started his 17th match of the season for Norwich but was unable to block goals from David Nugent and Sam Winnell.

In League One, Rodney Kongolo played the full 90 minutes for Doncaster Rovers during their eighth victory of the season as they beat Bury 1-0 while elsewhere in the competition Kean Bryan also featured for the entire duration of Oldham Athletic’s 3-2 loss to Scunthorpe.

In the Premier League, Joe Hart was part of the frustrated West Ham team which faced Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The game looked in the Hammers' hands as they entered half-time 2-0 up, but as they returned from the tunnel Hart was forced to make a number of saves.

Hart and his team mates’ efforts weren’t enough to prevent Roy Hodgson’s side clawing two back before the full-time whistle, which consisted of a penalty and a late goal from Wilfred Zaha in the 96th minute and meant that Slaven Bilic's side left with just one point.

North of the border, Patrick Roberts unfortunately sustained an injury during Celtic’s 62nd unbeaten domestic match against Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership.

The 20-year-old was named in Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI but only managed 30 minutes of play before being replaced by Scott Sinclair after picking up a hamstring injury - the midfielder is expected to miss Celtic's Champions League clash against Bayern Munich because of the problem.

In the same competition Brandon Barker featured in the winning Hibernian team which achieved a 1-0 victory over Motherwell.

Barker started for Hibs but was substituted in the 73rd minute for Vykintas Slivka despite a determined and pressing performance at Fir Park.

To Europe now, where three of our City loan stars played for NAC Breda in their Eredivisie clash against FC Utrecht.

The game between the Dutch sides ended with a 2-2 draw and on loan star Manu Garcia featured for the full 90 minutes, while Paolo Fernandes was brought on in the 81st minute for Mounir El Allouchi, and Thierry Ambrose – who started – was subbed for Thomas Enevoldsen.

In Turkey, centre-back Jason Denayer suffered his first defeat of the season in a Galatasaray jersey as the Super Lig side lost 2-1 to Trabzonspor.

The game between the Turkish outfits was incredibly heated as two of Denayer’s team mates were shown yellow cards while another two Galatasaray players received reds.

Over in Spain, Yaw Yeboah came on as a substitution in the second half for Real Oviedo, as they travelled away to face AD Alcorcon, but was unable to make a difference to the 2-0 score.

Finally, one of our loan stars featured in Girona’s success story against La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Girona – who are in the Spanish top flight for the first time in history – secured a shock 2-1 win over Zinedine Zidane's side and City loanee Pablo Maffeo played a part in the magic.

Madrid went 1-0 up at half time after an early goal from Isco, but Girona fought back as Cristhian Stuani and Portugues Manzanero grabbed a goal each in the second half.

Maffeo was unlucky not to find the back of the net after his cross-shot looped over ‘keeper Kiko Casilla and struck the woodwork, but nevertheless his efforts were recognised.

The game had been won before the hour mark and the 20-year-old was replaced by David Timor in the 75th minute.
