Sergio Aguero overtook Hernan Crespo to move up to third on Argentina’s list of all-time leading scorers as he bagged his 36th goal for their 4-2 defeat to Nigeria in Krasnodar.
Ever Banega’s pinpoint free-kick put the Argentines ahead after 27 minutes and Aguero’s close-range strike made it 2-0 nine minutes later.
But former City striker Kelechi Iheanacho pulled one back for Nigeria just before half-time - a goal that sparked the Super Eagles into life as they hit three more in the second half through Alex Iwobi (2) and Brian Idowu to seal a famous win.
Nicolas Otamendi played the full 90 minutes but Aguero was taken to hospital at half-time as a precaution after he suffered dizzy spells but was given the all-clear to return to Manchester as planned.
Meanwhile, David Silva was a second-half substitute in Spain’s entertaining 3-3 draw with Russia in St Petersburg.
And Bernardo Silva came on in the second half of Portugal’s 1-1 draw with the USA in Leiria.
