Vincent Kompany led Man City to an emphatic 5-0 Premier League finale at Watford – then challenged his colleagues to take that superb form into the new season come August.
Kompany, who was again at his commanding best at Vicarage Road, headed City into a fourth minute lead and from there Pep Guardiola’s men didn’t look back as they rounded off the campaign in scintillating style.
Sergio Aguero bagged a brace of goals – with his second and City’s third rounding off a quite magnificent team move – before Brazilians Fernandinho and Gabriel Jesus set the seal on a hugely impressive win.
The victory was enough to secure third place for City – ensuring the Club will enter the Champions League at the group stage rather than having to face a tricky qualifying play-off tie in August.
But with the majority of the players now preparing for some well earned rest, Kompany said it was vital the City squad picked up where they left off when they reconvene for the new campaign.
"We showed in moments how much quality there is in this team and what the standard should be going forward. I believe that you finish the season the way you want to start the next one,” said the City captain.
“Sometimes you get those day where you put on your boots and everything happens and that's what happened today
“We were really aggressive in retaining possession but we need to be extremely focused in the key moments in the box.”
Kompany’s goal was his third in the last eight games and after spending much of the season sidelined with injury, the Belgian showed he is now back to his commanding best.
And the 31-year-old, said he believed the way he had turned his season round was a reward for a positive mind-set.
"I'm really happy to score and get a clean sheet. My season was dead and buried early on but every minute is worth fighting for,” Kompany added.
“When you play for a big club, even if you don't reach a final, any minute you can get is worth fighting for.
“This season has been like this but in the end my game-time came back and I'm really happy with that and looking forward to next season.”
