Yaya Toure: We'll fight for fans against West Ham

BIG MAN: Yaya Toure strides forward

BIG MAN: Yaya Toure strides forward

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure cannot wait for the return of the FA Cup.

The Blues kick off this year’s campaign with a tough third-round trip to West Ham on Friday evening in what will be their first visit to the new London Stadium.

And ahead of the game, Toure, who scored winning goals in both the semi-final and final in 2011 to help end City’s 35-year wait for silverware, says he has a strong affinity with the competition, as well as the Club’s supporters.

“It’s a special competition for me,” Toure said. “We want to fight for the fans because they deserve it.

“They pay a lot for their tickets all these years and they support me always.

“I cannot forget that, how they support me and how they sing my name. It is not the same in every club”

Toure has been in superb form since his return to the starting lineup at Crystal Palace in November, impressing with his ability to control games and dictate the tempo.

And although he believes the game at West Ham is a tough assignment, he says being knocked out of the League Cup adds greater significance to the FA Cup.

“To be honest, I am always playing football to win,” he said. “You have to be realistic and understand sometimes you can lose. But we always start wanting to win.

“It will be a difficult game but the FA Cup is now huge for us.

“We are out of the League Cup so the FA Cup is even more important. We want to win.”
