Yaya hails City's prise guys

PERFECT PREPARATION: Yaya says West Ham provided the ideal test for City ahead of next week's Premier League opener at Brighton

PERFECT PREPARATION: Yaya says West Ham provided the ideal test for City ahead of next week's Premier League opener at Brighton

Yaya Toure believes Friday’s win over West Ham in Iceland was the perfect preparation for the new season.

The Blues won 3-0 in their final pre-season friendly, with goals from Gabriel Jesus, Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling sealing a comfortable win.

Toure, who played an hour of the game in Reykjavik, says West Ham’s defensive approach was different to anything else City have faced in pre-season and was exactly the kind of test the team needed with the Premier League season less than a week away.

“It’s good for the confidence, it’s good for the next game,” he said.

“The game we had today is the typical type of game we’re going to have usually in the Premier League and maybe in Europe.

“I think we found a difficult opponent who closed the lines, they don’t attack, they don’t open and I think today was good training for that because the games we produced against Madrid and Tottenham were quite open.

“For us it was good to have good pressing and today we found it a bit difficult because it was a long ball and the second ball was very important but I thought we had a good game today.

“It’s very important. In the first half when we get the chance to score the goal I said I think they’re going to be open.

“But West Ham, after the first goal, they stayed with the same system and it was difficult.

“But I think it’s good we can learn and try to adapt to the way the opponent is playing and make the break.”

Toure has found himself playing in a role just in front of the back four in recent times, something he says he is comfortable with.

He has become City’s distributor from deep, picking the ball up from the defenders and launching attacks, while also offering additional protection to the centre-backs.

With Pep Guardiola opting to play with a back three for much of pre-season, it’s a vital role, and Toure feels well-versed in the requirements having played there during his time under the Catalan at Barcelona.

“At Barcelona I was used to playing like that,” he said.

“I’m a type of player with a lot of experience.

“I’m lucky because I used to play under Pep at Barcelona and I know what he wants.

“He was a brilliant midfielder and Mikel Arteta as well and those two have helped me a lot and given me a lot of confidence.

“I’m just there to enjoy it and win trophies and that is what I want.”
