Fernandinho: Our season starts now

FERNANDINHO: Long, long way to go

FERNANDINHO: Long, long way to go

City can make it ten out of ten in South Wales on Saturday but Fernandinho is taking nothing for granted.

The Brazilian has sounded a timely reminder that the Blues enjoyed a perfect start to last season too and has promised that no-one in the squad is getting ahead of themselves at this early stage of the campaign.

Fernandinho was rested against Swansea in the EFL Cup meeting on Wednesday but is likely to come back into the XI for the league clash between the teams.

As a veteran of a number of Liberty Stadium skirmishes, the 31-year old knows that the three points up for grabs on Saturday won’t win themselves.

“In the Premier League we have started well,” the midfielder said.

“We have started exactly the same as last season with five wins in a row so we have to be careful.

“It is just the beginning of the season and we have a long way to go. It is too early to say who will be the champions next year.

“The season starts now for us. Swansea is a tough place to go and last season we drew there on the last day of the season.

“I watched their game against Chelsea and they played very well. It’s always a tough place to go to and win. This sort of game is going to be crucial for us to see what level we are really at.”

Fernandinho has been one of City’s top performers in the first five match days of the Premier League season along with Kevin De Bruyne.

The Londrina-born man has hailed the impact of his Belgian teammate this season and has described the experience of playing alongside him as “special”.

“Kevin is a very good player, a very intelligent player,” Fernandinho considered.

“When he has the ball he thinks so quickly and he makes the decision so fast that it’s hard for the opponent to react.

“For me it’s special because playing alongside him is very nice. He has decided most of our last few games by making assists or scoring goals. I hope he can keep this level to help us to reach our targets.”

As for the new manager, Fernandinho emphasised that he’s enjoying the experience of playing under Pep Guardiola, highlighting the Catalan’s close attention to detail as an important factor in the early success the squad is enjoying.

“It’s easy to understand him during the game because he prepares us for the game very, very well,” he explained.

“The time we have to prepare for the games is very short, but he’ll show us the slides, we’ll go to the pitch, we know exactly what we have to do.

"When he’s on the touchline he’ll give us some information to change our position or to change something we have to do. It’s easy to change positions like that because we work every day. We work very hard. We know exactly what we have to do on the pitch.”
