Stones: We showed what we’re made of

John Stones said Manchester City demonstrated what they’re capable of after getting the 2016/17 Premier League season off to a winning start against Sunderland.

The centre-back, who joined from Everton on Tuesday, impressed on his City debut which ended with a 2-1 win in Pep Guardiola’s first competitive game as manager.

Despite admitting more work is needed on the training pitch, Stones believes there are positives to be taken into Tuesday’s Champions League qualifying game against Steaua Bucharest.

“We’ve been working hard in the three or four days I’ve been here and I think we brought a lot of good things to the game today,” the 22-year-old said.

“We showed what we’re capable of and we’ll take that to Tuesday’s game.

“We were patient with the ball and we maybe could have played a bit quicker sometimes but I was pretty pleased with all the boys. I’m sure we'll find some things to work on in training.”

Guardiola handed a start to goalkeeper Willy Caballero, with the 34-year-old being preferred to Joe Hart.

The Argentinian stopper said he enjoyed his “surprise” starting place, and believes it will take time for the new manager to fully implement his style of play at the Etihad.

He said: “It was a surprise to me. I’ve trained very well in pre-season to have this opportunity.

“I tried to enjoy it today, and fortunately we’ve started very well with three points.

“This is a new country and club for the boss but we know a lot how he wants to play but its difficult because we’ve only trained as a full squad for two weeks.”
