City reach Premier League milestone

City reached the 1000-goal Premier League landmark when Fernando stabbed a loose ball home against West Brom last weekend.

It’s taken 18 seasons for the Blues to reach the four-figure mark – 12 to reach the first 500 and less than six to score the next half-century!

Along the way, there have been a number of notable landmarks and here, we’ll remember the players who helped City reach the magic figure.

Goal #1: David White v QPR 1992

White scored City’s first Premier League goal at the start of the 1992/93 campaign during Sky Sports’ first Monday Night Football show. With fireworks, cheerleaders and a whole host of other entertainment before the game, White’s goal earned a point for the Blues in a 1-1 draw at Maine Road.

First penalty: Keith Curle 1992

Curle tucked home City’s first Premier League spot-kick in a 3-2 win over Coventry City at Highfield Road. It was one of only two penalties the Blues scored that season.

Goal #50: John Pemberton 1993

Don’t recognise the name of the man who scored City’s 50th Premier League goal?  Don’t worry – Pemberton was a Sheffield United player who put through his own goal in a 1-1 draw at Bramall Lane towards the end of the 92/93 campaign.

Goal #100: Paul Walsh 1994

The diminutive former Liverpool and Spurs forward scored City’s 99th and 100th Premier League goals in just three minutes as Brian Horton’s side dismantled Everton 4-0 at Maine Road.  Uwe Rosler scored the other two goals.

Goal #250: Nicolas Anelka 2003

The quarter-century landmark was reached when Nicolas Anelka equalised for City in the New Year’s Day clash with Everton at Goodison Park.  The French striker would go on to bag Chelsea’s 1000th goal five years later, but this game ended 2-2.

City’s last Maine Road Premier League goal: Marc Vivien Foe 2003

How fitting that Marc Vivien Foe should score the Blues’ last goal at their former home of 80 years. Foe scored twice in the 3-0 win over Sunderland and though there was still one game to go, Southampton emerged 1-0 winners in the final match.

First City of Manchester Stadium Premier League goal: David Sommeil 2003

The first Premier League goal at City’s new home was saved until the 90th-minute of the opening home fixture with Portsmouth. Yakubu had given the visitors the lead on 24 minutes but Sommeil’s last-gasp equaliser sent the capacity home crowd away with a smile on their faces.

Goal #500: Shaun Wright-Phillips 2008

The prodigal son had returned to City after three years with Chelsea and it was his goal that clocked up the Blues’ half-century. Mark Hughes’ side, watched by new chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak for the first time, destroyed Portsmouth 6-0 with SWP bagging the fourth before setting up another couple.

Goal #1000: Fernando 2015

Brazilian midfielder Fernando had only scored one goal for City – an overhead kick away to West Brom – when he pounced in the six-yard box to poke home the Blues’ 1000th Premier League goal – against West Brom again!
