City duo combine to secure Spain victory

The City duo were both introduced from the bench with the Group I World Cup Qualifier poised at 1-0, and went on to make a telling impact late on.

Andres Iniesta found Navas in a good position on the right hand side, and the winger played in a trademark dangerous cross for his City teammate to fire into the net from close range.

Another two Blues players, David Silva and Javi Garcia, were unused subs for La Roja. Spain have now extended their lead at the top of the group to three points with two games remaining.

In Africa, Yaya Toure turned in another influential performance in the centre of the park for Ivory Coast in their World Cup Qualifier against Morocco. The midfield powerhouse demonstrated his range of passing, strength on the ball and rasping shot as the Elephants recorded a 1-1 draw.

Former Chelsea man Didier Drogba rescued a point from the penalty spot after the hosts went a goal down shortly after half time. Abdul Razak, on a season long loan at Anzhi Makhachkala, was an unused sub.

Elsewhere, City’s defensive pair, Matija Nastasic and Aleks Kolarov both played 90 minutes for Serbia in their key clash with Balkan rivals Croatia. It was a game Serbia had to win if they were to retain any hope of qualifying for the World Cup in 2014, but a feisty encounter which saw both sides have a man sent off finished 1-1 in Belgrade.

They now travel to face Wales on Tuesday knowing that Brazil is out of reach.

Edin Dzeko’s Bosnia-Herzegovina side were well on track to qualify for the 2014 finals, but recorded a shock 1-0 home loss to Slovakia in Group G. The Bosnian Diamond struggled to make an impact on the game as the visitors defended well.

Former Blue Vladimir Weiss caught the eye for Slovakia, who currently sit third in the group.

Samir Nasri came off the bench for the final 12 minutes of France’s stalemate with Georgia. Gael Clichy was an unused substitute for Didier Deschamps' men.

Another of City’s summer signings, Stevan Jovetic, was only fit enough for a place on the bench for Montenegro as they drew 1-1 away to Poland.

Costel Pantilimon was not involved as Romania pulled off a comfortable 3-0 win over Hungary, and although Vincent Kompany met up with Belgium his groin strain prevented him from playing any part in their 2-0 win away to Scotland.

Young Dutch centre-back Karim Rekik received his first call-up to the Netherlands senior side but an ankle knock prevented him from taking his place in the matchday squad.
