Marc-Vivien Foe: A tribute

It’s exactly ten years since Marc-Vivien Foe tragically died while representing Cameroon in the Confederations Cup and today the thoughts of everyone connected with Manchester City FC are with Marc’s wife, children and family members.

Marc spent the 2002/03 season on loan with the Blues from his parent club Lyon having previously played in England with West Ham United.

He proved an influential and popular member of the team during his 12 months at Maine Road but he left a lasting impression off it, too.

Club Ambassador Mike Summerbee said: “In his short career at Manchester City, Marc-Vivien Foe made a huge impression, not only on the pitch, but off it, too and was a very popular figure among supporters, staff and team-mates alike

He is still sadly missed by everyone at City and will always have a special place in the Club’s history

Former manager Kevin Keegan recalled at the time: “It was a privilege to work with Marco. You perhaps had to get to know him a bit to fully enjoy his personality - certainly his dress sense - but he was universally liked. Everyone knows what a wonderful player he was but more than that he was a fine human being.

“I will never forget the day I blasted him for not looking me in the eye when I was telling him something and the knock on the door that followed a few minutes later when he informed that where he came from if you respected someone you didn't look them in the eye!

“He had the ability to make us all smile and feel better. We miss him."

Marc’s No.23 shirt has been permanently retired by the Blues but ten years on, we still remember his ability, personality and warmth.
