Elite Development Squad defender Stephen Mfuni has joined Championship outfit Watford on loan for the remainder of 2025/26.

The 17-year-old has been developing his craft at the City Football Academy since Under-9s level.  

Throughout the age groups, Mfuni has stood out for his ability to read play, make dangerous runs forward with the ball at his feet and execute vital tackles.  

The England Youth international began playing competitive academy football aged just 15. Since that time he has clocked up more than 60 appearances for the Under-18s and EDS across various competitions.  

His most rewarding campaign was last season. Mfuni helped City win the Under-18 Premier League North title, the Premier League 2 league phase trophy and PL2 play-off title.  

Before that, in 2023/24, Mfuni was on target in City’s 4-0 FA Youth Cup final win over Leeds United at the Etihad, showing another string to his bow.

The defender, who is capable of playing at both centre-back and left-back, has also continued to go from strength to strength in 2025/26.  

His impressive 18 appearances in all competitions also saw him earn his senior debut when he figured in our 10-1 FA Cup third round win over Exeter City.  

Mfuni’s appearance as a second half substitute also made him the eighth Academy debutant this season.  

Now, with Watford in eighth place in the Championship, one point outside the top six, Mfuni will be looking to help the Hornets in their bid to secure a place in the play-offs.
