Doyle helps Young Lions book U19 EUROs semi-final slot

Callum Doyle helped England’s Under-19s seal their place in the last four of the EURO 2022 finals with a commanding 4-0 group win over Serbia.

The City defender was again an impressive presence at left back as the Young Lions back it back to back group wins in the Slovakia showpiece to book their ticket to the semi-finals.

Seeking to build on Sunday’s opening 2-0 group win over Austria, Ian Foster’s side got off to the best possible start as Dane Scarlett fired home a sixth minute low shot, seizing onto an inviting assist from Carney Chukwuemeka.

Scarlett then doubled England’s lead on 40 minutes. Doyle sparked the move, and picking out Brooke Norton Cuffey with a superb 40-yard arcing ball.

The right back whipped in a low cross which the Serbian keeper spilled and the ball rebounded off Scarlett’s chest into the net.

England’s dominance was further confirmed with a wonderful third goal on 68 minutes as Chukwuemeka seized on a loose Serbian pass before drifting up to the edge of the box and skilfully guiding home a pinpoint finish.

Substitute Daniel Jebberson then rounded off a superb win for the Young Lions by finishing from close range in injury time to seal a fine night’s work.

It means England can use Saturday’s final group game against Israel as vital preparation ahead of next week’s semi-finals where they will play either France or Italy.

Doyle’s City team-mate Liam Delap was an unused substitute against the Serbians.
