The Graduates: No.26 Sam Williamson

Sam Williamson had but a brief taste of first team football after rising through the ranks at the Academy.

Hailing from Macclesfield, Williamson was spotted at a very young age and was brought into City’s youth set-up when nine.  Rising through the system until part of the Under 18 set-up, he played a big part in the youth team’s progress to the 2006 FA Youth Cup Final in a side that contained such alumni as Micah RichardsDaniel Sturridge and Michael Johnson.

Sadly that side lost narrowly to Liverpool 3-2 on aggregate but Williamson signed professional terms and established himself as left-back in the reserves under the watchful eye of coach Frank Bunn, who had worked with Williamson at Platt Lane.

First team chances appeared limited until out of the blue he was given an opportunity late on in Sven-Goran Eriksson’s reign. An injury to then-skipper Richard Dunne saw the youngster thrown on for the last 35 minutes of a home win over Portsmouth. Despite an early yellow card, he acquitted himself well but that was to be the only time he appeared for the senior side.

A loan move to Wrexham in November of 2008 turned into a permanent transfer to the Racecourse Ground early the following year. Williamson would have had hopes of helping the Welsh side back into league football and giving his career a boost at the same time, but it did not happen and he was loaned out to Fleetwood Town. He was subsequently released by Wrexham and is currently a free agent.
